Wil Anderson announced he’ll be stepping down as co-host of Melbourne’s Triple M Hot Breakfast show in December.

But on Tuesday, the 46-year-old admitted he made a ‘terrible mistake’ quitting radio to focus on stand-up comedy just months before COVID-19 destroyed the industry.

‘Clearly it was terrible timing… The secret of comedy is timing and this wasn’t the greatest time to step away from a regular media job to spend the entire year touring live stand-up comedy,’ he told Mediaweek.

‘Comedy was the first thing that went [during COVID] and it will be the last thing to come back,’ he added.

Wil went on to say taking a break has allowed him to focus on his podcast and it has ‘challenged him to think about what is super important’.

‘To have these things taken away really challenges you to think about what is super important to you. It has given me some real time to work on the podcasts,’ he said.

‘I loved doing the radio, it was fun and I don’t regret the time I spent doing it… but I had been wanting to see if there was a way of making podcasting be more financial so I could just do that and not have to work on someone else’s project.’

In December last year, Wil announced his departure on air and said he’ll be focusing on live comedy and his various television projects – including ABC’s Gruen – in 2020.

‘Today is my last day on The Hot Breakfast,’ Wil told listeners.

‘I couldn’t have felt more included. The management here in the building are just absolutely incredible here,’ he added.

Wil had joined the Hot Breakfast team in 2017, replacing comedian Mick Molloy, and worked alongside Luke Darcy and Eddie McGuire.

Negotiations between Wil and Triple M management had been taking place for some time, according the Herald Sun.

In addition to hosting Gruen for the past 11 years, he also presents his own podcast, Wilosophy, and tours his stand-up shows around Australia.
