  • The drinks giant is also responsible for Smirnoff vodka, Guinness and Bailey’s
  • Staff at the plant are self-isolating following the outbreak among 13 workers 

Thirteen workers at a Glasgow packaging plant for drinks company Diageo have tested positive for coronavirus.

Diageo, has confirmed 13 workers have contracted Covid-19 at its packaging plant in Shieldhall, Glasgow, responsible for brands including Johnnie Walker and Bells scotch.  

The drinks giant, which also counts Smirnoff, Bailey’s and Guinness among its brands, says the outbreak has not had an impact on production.

The 13 workers affected are contractors, but a spokeswoman said they are not involved in the bottling part of the factory.

Diageo said strict measures are in place to ensure those who need to self-isolate have been told and stringent protocols are in place to ensure the safety of staff.

A Diageo spokesman said: ‘The health and well-being of our people, suppliers and the community is our number one priority.

‘We have stringent protocols and procedures in place to ensure our workplaces are as safe as possible.

‘We can confirm that twelve employees from one of our logistics contractors and one other contractor at our Shieldhall packaging plant have tested positive for Covid-19 over the past week.

‘All safety protocols and procedures have been followed, including a deep clean sanitation of the relevant area and detailed contact tracing.

‘A number of other individuals have been asked to self-isolate as a precaution and additional control measures have been put in place to prevent on-site transmission.

‘We continue to monitor the situation very carefully and we are in touch with the relevant authorities.’
