American issues: Halsey took to social media Sunday to share her recent conversation with Senator Bernie Sanders about the US presidential election and the wealth tax

Halsey wore a buttoned up pink dress and accessorized with matching earrings for her conversation with Sanders, the junior US Senator from Vermont.

She opened by asking the former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate if she should call him ‘Bernie’ or ‘Senator Sanders’ and he said, ‘Bernie is fine’.

Halsey said she was hoping to get information to the young people and was trying to do her best with the platform she’s amassed as an entertainer.

‘So yesterday there was a debate. It was arguably one of the most frustrating pieces of television that I’ve ever ad the misfortune of witnessing,’ Halsey said about the debate last week between President Trump, 74, and Democratic nominee Biden, 77.

She asked Sanders for his thoughts on the debate and he agreed with her assessment.

‘It certainly was not one of the great moments in American history,’ Sanders said.

He said it was important to not get sidetracked by that kind of spectacle and instead focus on issues important to Americans

Halsey said one of the greater struggles was how the election and events surrounding it ‘were unfolding more like a reality television show and less like a real serious event that will impact 300 million lives’.

The Closer singer also shared that she grew up in a ‘lower-class family’ and that her parents dropped out of college to have her.

She said her father is a person of color and her mother is white and she grew up in ‘really under-privileged situations’.

‘Now, as an adult at 26 years old I’m part of the one-percent,’ Halsey said added that her shift in perspective has made one thing clear to her personally.

‘There is no amount of money that I think is worth personally contributing to the alienation, the disenfranchisement of millions, hundreds of millions of people across this country. Which is why despite being in the one percent, I support the wealth tax. Because I believe that the people who oppose it are motivated by greed,’ Halsey said.

She said that her income doesn’t compare to that of billionaires and the only reason the super rich oppose the wealth tax is due to greed.

Sanders said that greed was a form of addiction and called out drug companies for putting profits over people.

‘We have an economy that is controlled by people who are incredibly greedy. They want more and more and more, so that we end up with three people in America owning more wealth than the bottom half of our society. Three people. The top one percent owns more wealth than the bottom 92 percent,’ Sanders added.

‘We must eradicate billionaires. It’s just an absolutely preposterous concept,’ Halsey said.

Halsey said she believed that a Biden administration would protect marginalized communities and Sanders said that Biden has a ‘great deal of empathy’ and that he is ‘more than aware of the suffering that is taking place in our country right now’.
