Singer-songwriter Mac Davis falls ‘critically ill’ after undergoing heart surgery in Nashville as his family asks fans for their ‘love and prayers’

Mac Davis, a country music legend as a singer and songwriter, has fallen ‘critically ill’ after undergoing heart surgery in Nashville.

The 78-year-old singer’s family released a brief statement and a photo of Miller, revealing his condition.

‘We are sorry to report that legendary singer/songwriter Mac Davis is critically ill following heart surgery in Nashville,’ the statement began.

A number of country music legends also responded to the news on Twitter, including Dolly Parton, who quote-retweeted #PrayForMacDavis.  

The Oak Ridge Boys also quote-retweeted the original tweet, stating, ‘We are all praying for Mac … one of the greatest singer songwriters ever … please give him our love #PrayForMacDavis.’

Davis was born in Lubbock, Texas, but he moved to Atlanta after high school, where he started his songwriting career.

He got his start for Nancy Sinatra’s Boots Inc. in the 1960s, where he wrote songs like In the Ghetto and A Little Less Conversation for Elvis Presley,

He released his first solo album Song Painter in 1970, with his breakthrough album coming in 1972 with Baby, Don’t Get Hooked On Me.

The album was certified platinum, along with his 1974 album Stop and Smell the Roses.

Davis was named the Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year award in 1974.

Along with his success as a musician, he also starred in his own NBC variety show, The Mac Davis Show, from 1974 to 1976, which lead to his acting career.

He made his feature film debut in the 1974 film North Dallas Forty, along with Cheaper to Keep Her and The Sting II.

He also appeared in several TV movies and, most recently he starred in 2008’s Beer For My Horses and 2017’s Where The Fast Lane Ends.
