RAF Typhoon jets scramble to escort passenger jet to Stansted airport after mid-air incident

- There are claims they were sent out to escort a passenger jet near the airport
Two RAF Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to escort a passenger jet flying into Stansted after a mid-air incident this evening.
The jets were scrambled just after 7pm to fly alongside the plane, which has now landed safely at the airport in Essex.
Essex Police are thought to be at the scene following after the plane was escorted to the ground at around 7.40pm.

A spokesman for London Stansted Airport confirmed a plane had landed safely on the ground following a police incident.
The matter is now thought to be in the hands of police.
Both jets were seen on flight patterns heading to Cheltenham to be refueled before returning to base in RAF Coningsby.

There were claims the jets were responding to an urgent call-out known as a Quick Reaction Alert, or QRA.
