A man has been charged with terror and explosive offences after police descended on a sleepy village. 

Dean Morrice, 33, of Paulton, Somerset, has been charged with terrorism and explosive offences and will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, police said.

He was detained after an investigation led counter-terror officers to a property in the village, which was searched by specialist officers and a bomb disposal unit was pictured on scene.

Morrice, who was arrested on August 20, has now been charged with two offences under Section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 – transmitting a terrorist publication – and one offence under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 – possession of terrorist related material.

He has also been charged under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883 – making or possessing an explosive substance in suspicious circumstances.

Morrice, of Paulton, has been remanded in custody and was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today, police said.

Locals previously described their shock when counter-terror officers and the bomb squad arrived.

One said: ‘It’s normally a very quiet village, this definitely isn’t a common occurrence here.’
