Lucy Hale opens up about the ‘horrible’ day Katy Keene was ‘prematurely’ cancelled after one season

Lucy Hale is still mourning the cancellation of her series Katy Keene, which was revealed to be cut after one season by The CW in July. 

As the leading lady reflected on the Riverdale spin-off, she described the series as the ‘highlight’ of her career and how much she enjoyed living in New York City. 

‘It is always sad when things come to an end prematurely but in my opinion, I wanted that show to go on for many years and seasons,’ the 31-year-old actress told E! News.

She added: ‘It was such a horrible day when we found out about it not coming back, but seeing the response from everyone being upset and the response of everyone else who supports me was only to show how much the show was loved.’ 

The news came as a surprise to the star, who says she knows exactly what her character would be doing in season two. 

‘It’s always a bummer to see that come to a halt without you wanting it to but, ultimately, I only had amazing things to say about that show and the people and everyone involved in it,’ she concluded.

Just hours after it was revealed that The CW had canceled Katy Keene, the show’s star addressed her fans in an emotional and heartfelt video. 

The Pretty Little Liars alum took to Instagram with a video about the news, admitting it took several takes because she was, ‘a blubbering mess.’

She started to tear up and get emotional several times in the three-minute video, where she encouraged fans to watch the show on its streaming home, HBO Max.

‘I kind of struggled all day with what I wanted to say about this, or if I shouldn’t say anything, but nothing felt right,’ Hale began.

She said she didn’t want to ‘post a picture’ because, ‘nothing would do justice to how I feel about Katy Keene, or how I feel about the people involved with it.

‘Truly, one of the highlights of my life,’ she added, calling the show a ‘total joy from top to bottom.’

She added that she has had shows been canceled before, adding each time it happens, ‘it’s just heartbreaking.’

The actress got all choked up when she said acting is, ‘a job that has broken my heart numerous times. This is bad, this is a bad one.’

She added it will ‘take some time to get over,’ adding she didn’t make the video to talk about how she felt about the cancelation.

‘Long story short, I am just grateful. I am grateful for the role of a lifetime, what a blast, and (creators) Michael Grassi and Roberto (Aguirre-Sacasa) and the cast. You guys are just magic,’ she said.  

She also thanked the fans, who have, ‘been there for me and supported everything I’ve done,’ before getting emotional again when she, ‘realized how lucky I am.’

The actress joked, while wiping tears from her eyes, ‘Oh s**t, sorry, some of you are like, and turn this video off.’

She added that she wants fans to continue to watch and support her show, which she thinks is ‘timeless’ even though ‘sometimes things don’t work out.’

‘Maybe it just was not the right time for it? I don’t know, I’m confused,’ Hale said, adding that the show is now HBO Max.

She then asked her fans to ‘be safe’ adding she needs to ‘get off my phone more’ and that she would recommend her fans doing that as well.
