The Powerpuff Girls will return as ‘disillusioned twentysomethings’ who ‘resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting’ in live-action reboot

The CW is developing a live-action reboot based on the beloved superhero animated series, The Powerpuff Girls, which aired on Cartoon Network from 1998 to 2005.

After six seasons of frequently saving Townsville from evildoers, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are set for a cheeky reboot that explores the grown-up versions of the formerly preschool-aged sisters.

The project, which hails from Diablo Cody (Juno) and Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars), reimagines America’s crayon-carrying crimefighters as ‘disillusioned twenty-somethings’ who ‘resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting,’ according to Deadline.

Super-powered sisters: The CW is developing a live-action reboot based on the beloved superhero animated series, The Powerpuff Girls, which aired on Cartoon Network from 1998-2005

Despite their initial resistance, it appears the super-powered siblings will reunite, as ‘the world needs them more than ever.’

The original series, created by Craig McCraken, was critically acclaimed and nominated for six Emmy Awards.

Peter Marks of The New York Times commended the show’s use of adult humor and pop culture references, declaring it ‘the sort of playful satire that can appeal as much to a viewer of 37 as 7.’

In the original series, Professor Utonium accidentally created his triplets by combining sugar, spice and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X.

They were regularly implored by the city’s mayor to help fight criminals with their array of powers, which included flight, super strength, speed and x-ray vision.

A spin-off the original series, starring Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li and Natalie Palamides, ran on Cartoon Network from 2016 to 2019.

In 2017, the series introduced a fourth member of the group, who became the first black superhero in their hometown of Townsville.

With bright turquoise hair and a purple dress, Blisstina – Bliss for short – was welcomed in Cartoon Network’s five part movie The Powerpuff Girls: The Power of Four.

Bliss is the older sister of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup and has teleportation, telekinesis, and super strength powers.

It has not been announced whether she will be included in the new project.
