Police hunt shooter as swan is found covered with blood after being shot in the neck with air gun

A swan was found with its neck covered in blood after it was shot with an airgun.

Police in South London found the injured swan with air pellet injuries in its neck at Southmere Lake near Thamesmead.

The Thamesmead East Police Team said the pellet wound was found on right side of the swan’s head and urged visitors to be aware of the incident when visiting Southmere Park.

Some swans along the River Thames are owned by the Crown and are protected under a special decree.

But all wild birds are still protected under the law and it is illegal to harm them.  

Greenwich Police are appealing for information to find the person responsible for the incident, which took place yesterday. 

They urged anyone with information to contact 101 using the crime reference 3911330/20.
