Bargain in Belgravia! Unique three-bedroom flat goes on sale for £1.3million – but there’s a catch

A stunning first floor flat in London’s Belgravia which resembles a miniature Downton Abbey inside has gone on sale for a tidy £1.3million.

The property in London’s posh Belgravia has 2,124 sq ft of space but manages to incorporate a dining room, a stately drawing room, a mini-gallery filled with oil paintings and a library.

The three-bedroom flat is in the building which used to be the St George’s Hospital school and is believed to be a former home of Florence Nightingale.

It’s a stone’s throw from the exclusive region of Knightsbridge, home of the department store Harrods, and Hyde Park – and properties of that size in the area are usually closer to £5million.

The catch with this flat, owned by the Grosvenor Estate, is that it comes with a £58,000 per year ground rent charge and a 12 year lease, which requires renewal every 15 years.

It is on the market with the Lurot Brand Estate Agency and can only be sold to ‘those involved in arts and media’. The building was originally a set of Victorian artists studios.

The grandiose apartment, which is single storey with a mezzanine, is dripping in classic style and the drawing room alone has red velvet walls, an open fireplace and mounted trophies.

A small staircase leads up to what resembles a mini-art gallery with the library area underneath it. The 10ft foot ceiling height also means there is more than enough room for full-drop chandeliers.

The dining room seats eight and has its own fireplace and there is a four-poster bed in the master bedroom, which has a vaulted ceiling once part of the since converted chapel.

The grandeur continues into the bathroom, which has a giant marble-topped tub adorned with a set of curtains and a marble basin.

The apartment was previously the home of the acclaimed interior designer, Tessa Kennedy, whose clients included King Hussein of Jordan, the film director Stanley Kubrick and The Beatles’ George Harrison. She decorated the flat before it was bought by its current owners.
