Police launch murder probe after good Samaritan, 24, is beaten to death trying to break up fight outside pub

  • The fight was outside The Clifton Wetherspoons pub in Sedgley, near Dudley
  • A 24-year-old male suffered fatal head injuries and died at the scene

A murder probe has been launched after a good Samaritan is beaten to death trying to break up a fight outside a pub.

A 24-year-old man suffered fatal head injuries as he was trying to break up the brawl outside The Clifton Wetherspoons pub in the town of Sedgley, near Dudley, West Midlands.   

The victim, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers were called to reports of a fight shortly before midnight on Saturday.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. 

West Midlands Police have placed a cordon on High Street and forensics officers have placed a blue tent has been placed at the scene. 

Detective Inspector Laura Harrison said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family of this young man who has sadly lost his life.

‘We are in the early stages of our investigations but we understand he may have tried to intervene in a fight when he was fatally injured.’    

Local resident, Jeanette Clouds said: ‘He wasn’t stabbed, but was trying to break up a fight between a group of lads and some of them turned on him he got beaten up and hit over the head and he had passed away.’ 

One witness who did not want to be named said: ‘There were five lads on one, the bouncers didn’t do anything to stop it, if they had only stepped in to help, the lad could still be alive.’

Gail Bowater commented on the large queue round the corner, with many people looking underage: ‘We came past there [The Clifton pub] last night there were queues to get in right round the corner, many of them looked too young. 

‘This is so very tragic.’ 

Wetherspoon spokesman, Eddie Gershon, told Black Country Live: ‘The pub’s CCTV shows a group of males by the taxi rank at the side of the pub attacking another male. 

‘The individual managed to get away and ran to the front of the pub where he was let in for his own safety.

‘The group then started attacking another male. Once the group dispersed, door staff at the pub went to assist him on the floor putting him in the recovery position.
