Selena Gomez joins Steve Martin and Martin Short for Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building

Selena Gomez will join comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short for Hulu’s new crime comedy Only Murders In The Building

Selena Gomez is set to join comedy veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short in the new Hulu comedy Only Murders In The Building.

The 28-year-old actress and singer stars as a young woman obsessed with true crime stories who runs into two older men who share her passion, according to Variety.

The streaming series marks the first time the Spring Breakers star has led a TV show since she starred in the Disney Channel’s Wizards Of Waverly Place from 2007 to 2012.

New series: Selena Gomez, 28, returns to scripted television with Only Murders In The Building, a crime comedy costarring Steve Martin, 74, and Martin Short, 70; shown in February

Steve Martin, 74, and Martin Short, 70, are likely to be attuned to each other’s comic instincts as they collaborated multiple times over the decades and appeared together in the modern comedy classic Three Amigos and the 1991 remake of Father Of The Bride.

Their true crime–obsessed characters will find themselves wrapped up in a murder of their own in the dark comedy.

Only Murders In The Building was previously announced in January at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

The show has a straight-to-series order, and Gomez will also join the production as an executive producer, alongside Martin, Short, John Hoffman, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal, CEO of Rhode Island Ave. Production.

Martin is credited with the series idea and will co-write it with Hoffman.

‘I heard the pitch on Wednesday, and it was the best hour I had all week,’ Craig Erwich, Hulu’s head of original programming, told Deadline. ‘It’s really special, surprisingly emotional. It’s really modern and self-referential about podcasts and murders, it’s got some great surprises. When they pull this off, it’s going to be really special.’

Hulu recently had a major true crime success with The Act, starring Joey King and Patricia Arquette, though Only Murders In The Building will be fiction and played for laughs.

The genre has been in ascendance in recent years thanks to the success of podcasts like Serial and numerous streaming documentaries.
