Robbie Williams and Ayda Field credit Cameron Diaz with saving their relationship

Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda have credited Cameron Diaz as the reason they rekindled their relationship.

The singer, 46, revealed he was chatting to the actress, 41, about his relationship, after he and Ayda, 41, had split for the third time, as she hinted that it ‘didn’t sound like they were over.’

Robbie then revealed that in that moment he felt ‘the universe’ was telling him to reunite with Ayda and marry her, and they tied the knot in 2010.

Speaking during their podcast (Staying) at Home with the Williamses, Robbie explained he was chatting to Cameron during an event at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood.

At the time he and Ayda had just broken up and had been apart for two weeks, with the actress explaining: ‘I just loved you and that was the thing for me. Whether I was with you or not, which of course I wanted to be with you, but I just loved you so much and wanted you to be happy and well. 

‘And I hope that it was with me and I didn’t understand at times why it was not with me. But I also kind of surrendered on some level, because I had to heal when we weren’t together, to try to move forward. 

‘We kind of did this dance for a year and a half maybe? We broke up three times, two at the very beginning and one very random one towards the end of the year.

‘At the end of those two weeks I had just wrapped a pilot TV show and you were desperate to see me. And I think that was the night that you had just seen Cameron Diaz at the Chateau Marmont.’

Robbie then clarified that it was after a conversation with Cameron he contacted Ayda right away to rekindle their romance.

He said: ‘Let me just qualify that – Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore were at the Chateau Marmont, several tables. 

‘I’m floating around and we had split up and I was chatting away with people and I had started to chat with Drew and Cameron. 

‘And I started to espouse about this brilliant person that I had just ended a relationship with and there were all of these words coming out of my mouth about how incredible you were, how beautiful, smart, funny and Cameron Diaz said ”it doesn’t sound like that one’s over” and in that moment the universe went ”go to Ayda, be with her, marry her”.’

Robbie and Ayda went onto marry in 2010, and have four children, Theodora, seven, Charlton, five, Colette, 23 months and five-month-old baby Beau.

The couple were due to renew their vows this year to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, but those plans have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile Cameron also surprised fans in January when she revealed she’d welcomed her daughter Raddix with husband Benji Madden, after quitting acting in 2014.

Robbie and Ayda also revealed that alongside a turbulent romance, the didn’t hit it off straight away following an awkward first date.

Ayda recalled: ‘So we both weren’t vibing off each other I think and we thought we had so much in common on text and on the telephone.’ 

Robbie added: ‘We instantly didn’t, did we?’ as Ayda explained how their first date had been ‘weird’ until they connected at a particular moment. 

She said: ‘We were both silent. You were silent Bob and I was chatty Kathy and it was just a bit weird. 

‘So I call my friends because I said they were having a party and they ask ”are you ok? He seems a bit weird” and I was like ”no, no it’s fine” and you (Robbie) said ”why don’t we go back to the party?”’   

‘And without giving many details, which we will not give on this podcast, there was a moment that we started talking, this incredible moment on the couch where we were talking and I felt this huge kind of energetic expansion of the universe and it was like I had known you my whole life. 

‘It was like someone fully and completely understood me and I understood them. It was like this silent language that was happening, this very strong, emotional, electric feeling. It was like breathing in air for the first time!’
