Issa Rae to produce documentary on history of Black television for HBO… after her show Insecure nets 8 Emmy nominations for the cable network

Issa Rae will executive produce a documentary on the history of Black television.

The 35-year-old actress and writer will be one of the creative forces behind the two part HBO doc titled Seen & Heard, according to Variety on Wednesday. 

Who Killed Malcolm X? helmer Phil Bertelsen is attached to direct.

The doc will explore the impact of African American television on contemporary actors, showrunners and other creatives.

In a statement, Insecure star Rae wrote, ‘Black people have such a rich, but often unacknowledged history in Hollywood.’

‘We have defined American culture and influenced generations time and time again across the globe.’ 

‘I’m honored to pair with Ark Media to center and celebrate the achievements of those who paved a way for so many of us to tell our stories on television,’ concluded the star of The Lovebirds.

The news comes less than two weeks after it was announced that Rae’s scripted TV series Insecure had netted 8 Emmy award nominations for HBO. 

The show’s nominations include Best Comedy Series, Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Rae and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Yvonne Oriji. 

The comedy-drama has been running for four seasons.
