Netflix is in talks to pick up Disney’s The Woman in the Window starring Amy Adams to bypass a theatrical run and head straight to streaming

With movie theaters still largely shut down across the country, Disney may be selling off one of its upcoming movies to Netflix.

The Woman in the Window, based on the bestselling novel by A.J. Finn and starring Amy Adams, may be picked up by Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

The film was set for release on May 15, but it was pushed to an undetermined date due to COVID-19, and now it may forgo a theatrical release if Netflix picks it up.

Sources claim Netflix is ‘closing in on a deal’ for worldwide rights to the film, which was produced by 20th Century Fox’s Fox 2000 label.

Films like The Woman in the Window, a thriller with a midrange budget, is said to be more ‘vulnerable’ now, because studios will have a backlog of big budget movies to release into theaters once they re-open.

The R-rated thriller will also be the final film under 20th Century Fox’s Fox 2000 label, which has been disbanded under Disney’s ownership.

The Woman in the Window follows Anna Fox (Amy Adams), an agoraphobic child psychologist in New York City who spies on her neighbors from her brownstone.

She befriends one of her neighbors (Julianne Moore), one of the few people she’s opened up to, but when she disappears under mysterious circumstances, she learns more about her family than she ever wanted to know.

The film also stars Anthony Mackie, Brian Tyree Henry, Gary Oldman, Wyatt Russell,  Fred Hechinger and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The film, directed by Joe Wright (Darkest Hour, Pan) from an adapted screenplay by Tracy Letts (August: Osage County), was originally slated for release on October 4, 2019.

It was pushed from that date in July 2019 when test audiences reacted negatively towards the third act of the film.

It was then pushed to May 15, 2020, before being delayed indefinitely by the COVID-19 pandemic that has shuttered theaters around the world.

Adams also stars in Hillbilly Elegy from director Ron Howard, which is currently slated for release in November though that may change due to COVID-19.

She was last seen on the big screen in 2018’s Vice, which was nominated for Best Picture, and the HBO series Sharp Objects.

She will be featured again as Lois Lane in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is coming to HBO Max in 2021, and she’s attached to star in Disenchanted, a sequel to 2007’s  Enchanted.
