Australian Idol star Anthony Callea lambasts ‘deplorable’ Melburnians for wearing masks incorrectly as a state of disaster is declared in Victoria amid soaring COVID-19 cases

Anthony Callea has lambasted ‘ignorant and deplorable’ Melburnians for not taking the state’s mandatory mask rules seriously.

Soon after Premier Daniel Andrews declared a state of disaster over the coronavirus crisis after recording 671 new cases on Sunday, the Australian Idol star, 37, took to his Instagram Stories to detail a frustrating account of what happened during his short outing earlier in the day.

The singer – who also shared a now-viral clip of hordes of Melburnians congregating along a beach – blasted some for wearing their masks ‘hanging down’ and also took aim at those who removed their face coverings to chat with other dog owners.

Anthony said in the clip: ‘Just took my dog out for a poo and did a lap around the park. The reason why parts of Victoria still has high cases of coronavirus is because there’s too many f******* out there that don’t give a f****** s***.

‘Sorry about my French, but wearing a mask hanging down is not wearing a mask. Congregating with five or six people having a coffee and taking your masks off is not wearing a mask!’

He continued to advise: ‘Stop being in the middle of the street and having a conversation just because there’s another dog owner. [It] doesn’t mean you need to take your mask off and have a conversation.

‘The amount of ignorant people out there is doing my head in,’ he concluded.

He added the caption: ‘Really Melbourne? And then you blame everyone else and the government. Selfish, ignorant and deplorable behaviour.’

On Sunday a state of disaster was declared, and a curfew of 8 pm was instated to contain the soaring COVID-19 cases.
