One of Britain’s highest profile hedge fund managers Crispin Odey has been charged with indecently assaulting a woman more than 20 years ago.  

The Tory donor, 61, was charged on May 14 this year over an alleged incident at an address in Chelsea, west London in 1998.

But Mr Odey has denied the alleged indecent assault in a statement released on Friday.

Prosecutors said he is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 28 following a complaint by a woman.

The Metropolitan Police said Odey is alleged to have indecently assaulted ‘a woman over 16 years of age’ on or around July 13, 1998, at an address in Swan Walk, Chelsea.

Odey, of Swan Walk, said in a statement on Friday: ‘The allegation is denied and I will strongly contest this matter.’

The influential financier and founder of Odey Asset Management was a high-profile backer of the Brexit campaign, who donated more than £870,000 to pro-Leave groups.

In the run up to the 2016 European Union referendum, Mr Odey donated more than £870,000 to pro-Brexit groups.
