Coming soon: Showtime released the first trailer of its upcoming limited series, The Comey Rule, on Wednesday, showing Brendan Gleeson transformed into President Donald Trump as he comes face to face with former FBI Director James Comey, played by Jeff Daniels

‘I know some people in the bureau (FBI) have it in for me,’ Gleeson says in a distinguishable raspy Trump voice. ‘But I’m the President now.’

While Trump grapples with his new role, Comey seems to be handling larger concerns.

‘Why are there four guys with ties to Russia on one campaign,’ Daniels says as Comey to an advisor, before seemingly meeting with Russian officials.

‘I’ve looked at this from every angle,’ he adds. ‘They’re all terrible. We’re steaming towards an ice berg.’

A scene flashes of Gleeson, as Trump, heading out to the 2017 Inauguration, his silhouette distinguishable as the President, in a draping dark coat and combed back hair.

In the short trailer, Trump remains an ominous figure, with no clear shots of his face.

The Comey Rule is based on the New York Times bestselling book by Comey, A Higher Loyalty and more than a year of additional interviews with a number of key principals.’

Of the series, Showtime says ‘The Comey Rule is not a biopic of one man, but is instead the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.’

And calls Russia’s interference in the 2016 election a, ‘deep and unprecedented penetration into American politics’.

The first night of the two-night, event will explore the earliest days in the Russia investigation and the FBI investigating Hillary Clinton’s emails, and how they impacted election night when Trump shocked the world.

Part two, however, is said to be a ‘day-by-day account’ of the volatile relationship between Trump and Comey in his first few months in the White House. Based on scenes that appear to show Comey’s testimony in front of Congress it appears to cover that as well.

President Trump dismissed Comey on May 9, 2017, after he faced criticism for his 2016 handling of the bureau’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

Mr Comey, who was appointed FBI Director by President Obama, was also heading an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election and alleged links between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Although presidents have occasionally clashed with FBI directors, Mr Comey was the second ever director to be dismissed from the Bureau.

Comey’s firing by Trump triggered a 22-month long investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Russian election interference in 2016.

Mueller documented numerous contacts between Trump campaign figures and Moscow but found insufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy.

Aside from Daniels and Gleeson the series boasts an all-star ensemble cast including Holly Hunter as Acting Attorney General Sally Yates and Kingsley Ben-Adir as President Barack Obama.

The cast also includes Michael Kelly as former FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Jennifer Ehle as Patrice Comey, Scoot McNairy as former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Jonathan Banks as former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, Oona Chaplin as former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, Amy Seimetz as former FBI lawyer Trisha Anderson, Steven Pasquale as former FBI agent Peter Strzok and Peter Coyote (The Disappearance) as Robert Mueller.
