‘That’s the third time I’ve seen it and I still cry’: Weekend Today host Rebecca Maddern breaks down on air over upsetting COVID-19 video

Rebecca Maddern was overwhelmed with emotion after watching a touching video on Weekend Today.

The breakfast presenter, 42, revealed she had already seen the video twice before watching it on air, but she couldn’t help but cry every time.

In the footage, a three-year-old girl was reunited with her mum and dad after being separated for six months in different countries due to COVID-19 border closures.

‘Oh god,’ she said, as her co-host Richard Wilkins handed her a tissue.

‘That’s the third time I’ve seen it this morning and I still cry,’ Rebecca admitted.

She added: ‘Imagine not seeing your little girl for six months and you’re in another country in a pandemic.’

‘Oh stop, you’ll get me going again,’ Richard said, seemingly revealing he had become emotional earlier as well.

Handling out more tissues, he added: ‘Let’s go to the weather.’

‘Can you do it? I’m too emotional. This show is so sad!’ Rebecca said.

The Australian Ninja Warrior host said that people in Sydney aren’t social distancing and ‘it’s only a matter of time’ before there’s a spike in cases similar to what happened in Melbourne.

‘Not to be a killjoy but I can’t stop looking at everyone in Sydney pretending COVID-19 is gone,’ she wrote on Instagram earlier this month.

She added: ‘From most of the posts I see on here, there is no social distancing and I just don’t believe that no one has it.

‘Yes I may be a tad jealous because I’m in lockdown but I just think it’s only a matter of time.’
