John Barrowman makes his debut as ruthless recruiter Dr Drew on Holby City as trailer teases star appearance

John Barrowman is set to make his debut appearance on Holby City.

The BBC hospital drama is set to welcome it’s latest recruit next week as John, 53, takes on the role of ruthless recruiter Dr Drew Nicholson-Heath.

John has previously starred in Doctor Who spin-off – Torchwood – and the actor has admitted he can’t wait to return to another ‘iconic BBC drama’.

The spring trailer for the series teased John’s appearance on the show, as he arrives at the hospital on the lookout for talent – prompting certain team members to do whatever it takes in order to impress him.

The cutthroat consultant – who has been nicknamed The Poacher – catches the attention of Cameron Dunn (Nic Jackman), who has his sights set on impressing Dr Drew.

Yet his efforts prove fruitless and renowned global recruiter Drew finds Cameron more class clown than standout doctor.

After realising his tactics have not worked on high-flyer Drew, Cameron fears his sinister side could be exposed.

And with Drew’s sights now set on Nicky (Belinda Owusu), Cameron hatches a plan to gaslight her into believing she has slipped up in theatre.

Drew is not unfamiliar with the staff at Holby City and his is the ex-boyfriend of Ange Godard (Dawn Steele).  

Drew with a strong Scottish accent which comes naturally after the star moved from Glasgow to the U.S as a child.

During the trailer, Drew bumps into former flame Ange who asks: ‘What are you doing here Drew?’

In a smart suit with immaculate hair, Drew replies: ‘Slumming it I guess.’  

In a statement John Barrowman who also starred as Captain Jack Harness in Doctor Who and spin-off series Torchwood said: ‘Being part of another iconic BBC drama is just fabulous. 

‘I was welcomed with open arms by the cast and crew and felt like part of the Holby City family right away.

‘My character Drew brings a new flavour to the show and I look forward to his return soon. Surgery will never be the same again.’       

Executive Producer of Holby City and Casualty Simon Harper added: ‘It’s a major thrill to have a star and household name of John Barrowman’s calibre guesting on the wards as the charismatic Drew, who is set to ruffle the feathers of an increasingly beleaguered Cameron and get some serious banter in with his ex, Ange.

Holby City airs on BBC One on Tuesdays at 8pm.
