Dorset mansion from Kate Winslet Ammonite film listed for £1m

A Grade II listed seven-bedroom home that has access to a private beach has gone on the market for £1million.

Peek House is a grand home on the 350-acre Rousdon Estate, an enclave of 104 homes where a group of freeholders own the mile-long Charton Beach in Charmouth, Dorset.

The house sits 500ft above the beach which was used for filming for Ammonite, the yet-to-be released film starring Kate Winslet as palaeontologist Mary Anning.

Access to the beach is along a steep path through the undercliff that was also used in the 1981 film The French Lieutenant’s Woman starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.

The property, which is near Lyme Regis on the Devon border with Dorset, forms a substantial part of a former Victorian mansion built by Sir Henry Peek.

The house was completed in 1878 at a reputed cost of £250,000, which would be £13m in today’s money.

It later became a boarding school, before it was turned into a private estate in the late 1990s.

Peek House has been completely refurbished to a high standard with decoration keeping in with its Victorian roots.

Isabel Clifton, from estate agents Strutt & Parker, said: ‘This is a lovely and magical place by the sea.

‘It was an old boarding school and before that it was a private house. The school sold it in the 1990s and a development company split the main mansion into five houses, one of which is Peek House.

‘They also converted the old stables and built some new builds so there’s 104 properties across the estate.

‘It’s very spread out. You arrive down this long sweeping drive and see the huge mansion, you don’t see the other houses as they’re all tucked away and dispersed across the 350 acres.

‘This is the first time it has been on the market since it was developed and sold. The lady who owns it owns three properties there. She lives in one and has rented this out for holidays.

‘The house has been beautifully done and has been a popular holiday rental for big families and group get togethers.

‘It will either be a family home or a party house.

‘Owners have access to a private beach, Charton. It takes about half an hour down a rocky path but once you get there it’s heavenly.

‘There’s been lots of filming round there, Kate Winslet was filming at Charton Beach last year.

‘All the homeowners in the estate have a right to use the beach but you can only make decisions if you buy a share in the freehold, which is about £10,000.’
