Al Capone rose to notoriety as the nation’s most infamous crime kingpin during Prohibition, with dozens of murders attributed to him.

However he eventually got nabbed and imprisoned for evading tax on his fortune from such illegal avenues as bootlegging, gambling and prostitution.

He was jailed in Atlanta in 1932 and shifted to Alcatraz two years later, and his wife Mae loyally pushed for his release.

While he was in jail his syphilis – which he had caught aged 20 as a brothel bouncer – was found to have reached the tertiary stage and was affecting his brain.

Eventually he was transferred to a prison on the California mainland, where he was paroled in 1939 on account of his mental problems.

After a brief stay in a Baltimore hospital he retreated to Palm Island where he declined until his death of cardiac arrest at the age of 48.
