And the Australian actor has revealed the bizarre drinking tradition the Shape Of You hit-maker, 29, introduced at his rural New South Wales farm.

Appearing on Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa this week, Russell said Ed had started a trend of drinking shots out of Johnny Cash’s Grammy.

‘Ed knew that in my life as a collector one of the things I’d done is I had bought it [the Grammy] from the Johnny Cash auction after his death. So we had a bit of fun that day and we were having a drink at night and he said “you know, where is that Grammy?” So I showed him and he said “now I show you what we do”.

‘I was like “dude you can’t do that, that’s sacrilegious! You can’t take the symbol of success from Johnny Cash’s life and treat it like it’s a shot glass”,’ Russell said in shock towards his friend at the time.

However, Ed claimed the award’s design lent itself to be used as a celebratory item.

‘After all these years and all the things they’ve changed on Grammys, it’s still big enough to fit an imperial ounce of your favourite alcohol. All those years I never knew that’s what you get up to with Grammys!’ Russel told the radio hosts.

He added since the tradition was started, no guest has ever turned down the offer to take a shot from the award’s horn.

The pair reportedly met for the first time when Russell presented Ed with the British Album of the Year gong at the BRIT Awards in February 2015.

Russell is one of Ed’s few famous friends, with the pop star claiming he keeps a tight circle of pals, that is primarily made up of people from his high school days.

The red-headed pop star discussed his friendship with Russell while performing at Nova’s Red Room at the Sydney Opera House in 2017.

Ahead of his performance, Ed told Nova’s Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small that he’d started hanging out with Russell because ‘he loves getting drunk and I love getting drunk’.

‘We don’t get anything from each other other than just a night out,’ the musician said, adding: ‘We get an enjoyment of hanging out rather… There is no boost in either of our careers from our association.’
