The Voice Australia: The bizarre reason why the finale looked ‘fake’

Revealed: The bizarre reason why The Voice Australia finale looked ‘fake’ – as viewers liken the experience to watching The Truman Show

The Voice Australia’s highly-anticipated season finale saw Guy Sebastian’s brother Chris take out the winning title on Sunday night.

But many viewers have expressed their disappointment at the Channel Nine program, claiming the finale appeared ‘fake’ and ‘awkward’.

However, it seems there is little that could have been done to prevent the feeling that the finale was staged.

Prior to the finale on Sunday, a production insider told News Corp that Channel Nine was forced to record four separate winner announcements as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

A public vote determined which victory went to air on Sunday

Winner Chris Sebastian admitted to News Corp prior to Sunday’s finale that it was ‘definitely awkward’ to film different four different ending scenarios.

‘I think some people acted better than others. I definitely tried to exaggerate as much as I could because I wanted it to be like how it would be like if I actually did win,’ he said.

Chris also revealed that the finalists only had one chance at recording their endings.

‘Obviously they do the confetti, the sparklers up the back, it’s quite a spectacle and we had to go through that four times,’ he mused.

Unfortunately, the pre-recorded winner announcements rubbed many viewers the wrong way, with one likening the finale to The Truman Show – a movie about an eerie world where everything is staged.

To make matters more awkward, COVID-19 travel restrictions also meant coaches Kelly Rowland and Boy George (who are based in the US and UK respectively) were unable to appear in person on Sunday night.

Instead, Kelly and Boy George only appeared in pre-recorded video segments that were filmed inside their homes abroad.

COVID-19 restrictions also meant the finale was recorded without a live studio audience, forcing producers to supplement the drama by playing a fake applause track on loop throughout the finale.

Some viewers took umbrage at the canned applause, with one Tweeting: ‘Has #TheVoiceAu finale had this fake audience cheering the entire time? Really?’
