Why does Pip Edwards always pose with her nose up? The compelling theory behind the P.E Nation designer’s signature Instagram angle

She’s known for her trend-setting activewear line P.E Nation.

But it seems Pip Edwards also knows a thing or two about trend-setting on social media, as the designer has developed her own trademark Instagram pose in recent years.

Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Pip, 40, is almost exclusively photographed from a low angle, with her head tilted back and her nose pointed upwards.

Pip almost always poses with her legs astride, while her arms are often placed in a dynamic position.

As for her facial expression, Pip is rarely pictured without her signature coy smile.

Low-angle photography is popular in the fashion world because it can make the subject’s legs appear longer and their chin seem more defined.

The extreme camera distortion can also hide less attractive parts of a model’s body, such as the top of the nose, the forehead and the hairline.

Fashion model Shannon Thaler explained to StyleCaster: ‘When taking a full-body picture, I like to have the camera [person] hold the camera just below eye-level. A photo aimed ever-so-slightly upward makes for long lines – Hello, legs!’

Given that Pip’s brand sells activewear leggings, it’s hardly surprising she is a fan of displaying her pins from the best angle possible on Instagram.

There are also scientifically-proven benefits of taking photos at a low angle.

According to a recent study by Florida State University, people often select certain camera angles when posing for photos to change the way they are perceived by others.

‘As do members of other social species, people use relative physical position to manage social impressions,’ the study concluded.

Psychology: Experts agree that low-angle shots can make a subject appear stronger, bolder and more authoritative - which is often the case in Pip's photos

By lifting their chin up, the subject appears to ‘look down through their nose’ at someone, creating the impression that they are superior to the viewer.

Pip’s famous coy smile also helps to suggest this idea of fearlessness.
