Jennifer Grey and Lionsgate project prompts whispers a Dirty Dancing sequel could be on the way… 33 years after the original

A new Lionsgate film might be a sequel to Dirty Dancing.

Actress Jennifer Grey, 60, is currently attached to an untitled dancing-themed movie set in the 1990s. She is set to star and executive produce.

News of the project has some whispering about a sequel to the 1987 dance flick, according to Deadline.

Sources for the site didn’t confirm gossip, but did not take the possibility off the table.

The project would make sense given that Lionsgate has distribution rights the film and that Grey is known for her iconic role as Baby, a girl who falls for her dance instructor, played by Patrick Swayze, during summer in the Catskills.

If the sequel in a go, Lionsgate is likely banking on a built-in audience.

The original Dirty Dancing earned $218M globally after being produced with just a $5m budget.

The movie also earned Oscar gold for the song (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life, written by by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.

It won the same honor at the 1987 Golden Globes, where leads Grey and Swayze were both nominated in the comedy/musical acting categories.

Dirty Dancing made history as the first film to sell over a million copies via home video.

The movie also had two multi-platinum soundtrack releases: the original and a 1988 follow-up titled More Dirty Dancing.

Still, Lionsgate hasn’t always been successful with the property.

2004 saw the release of Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which took the star-crossed love story to 1960s Cuba.

The movie – which featured Diego Luna, Romola Garai, January Jones and John Slattery – earned under $28million after spending $25million to get made.

It currently sits at a less than impressive 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Recently Jennifer has enjoyed roles in the Amazon comedy Red Oaks, The Conners, and Grey’s Anatomy. Sadly, co-lead Patrick passed away in 2009 from cancer.
