BT to move 1.3 million customers on to more expensive deals

BT set to pocket an extra £28m a year by moving 1.3 million customers on to more expensive deals

BT is to move 1.3 million customers on to a more costly deal that could see the telecoms giant pocket an extra £28 million a year.

Landline customers shifted to the pricier ‘unlimited minutes’ plan will have to pay an average of £1.83 extra every month — or £21.96 a year.

The telecoms giant says customers will pay no more than £4.50 extra a month. Only those who opt out can avoid the price hike, due to come into force from September 1.

The new plan, which costs £15 a month for new customers, offers unlimited landline and mobile calls at any time.

BT says the customers being moved are those who pay for unlimited landline calls only, but are billed extra every month for calling mobiles.

People who do not want to be upgraded can choose a pay-as-you-go deal, or one that offers 700 minutes to mobiles or landlines at any time for £7 a month.

BT says customers could also leave their contract without a penalty in the 30 days after they receive the letter informing them of the proposed changes.

But James Daley, of campaign group Fairer Finance, says: ‘You’d hope [BT] would be leading by example rather than pushing through significant price increases for their customers at a time when a significant number can least afford it.’
