  • 34-year-old mother gave birth to a baby boy at Hai Phong International Hospital
  • Moments after being born the baby grabbed the intrauterine device (IUD)
  • It is thought that the IUD moved from its original position and became ineffective
  • Normally an IUD is inserted into a woman’s uterus to stop eggs being fertilised

A newborn baby has been pictured in Vietnam clutching the contraceptive coil his mother used in a failed bid to stop her conceiving.

The 34-year-old mother of the baby, who has had two other children previously, reportedly inserted the intrauterine device (IUD) two years ago.

The IUD came out at the same time as the baby, but separately – it was only after being born that the baby grabbed the coil.

Pictures taken by Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong at Hai Phong International Hospital, northern Vietnam, shows the newborn baby holding onto the IUD.

Phuong said: ‘After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention.

He also said that the IUD may have failed to prevent the pregnancy if it had moved from its original position.

Two of the photos show the baby boy with his eyes shut while holding onto the IUD.

In another picture, the IUD can be seen lying next to the newborn.

The baby was born healthy and weighed 7lbs and remains under observation with his mother.

In practise, after being inserted into a woman’s uterus, the IUD is meant to release either copper or hormones to prevent sperm from fertilising any eggs.
