Radio DJ’s Chris Moyles, Johnny Vaughan and Jamie Theakston ‘unlikely to be axed in cuts at Global’

DJs Chris Moyles, Johnny Vaughan and Jamie Theakston ‘are very unlikely to get axed’ during cost cuts at Global after the coronavirus pandemic

  • Global, who owns Heart and Radio X stations, are ‘restructuring’ to cut costs
  • MailOnline has been told it would be ‘very unlikely presenters would be effected’

Popular DJs Chris Moyles, Johnny Vaughan and Jamie Theakston are ‘very unlikely’ to be axed from their prime-time slots during cost cutting and restructuring at radio group Global.

The presenters, who are all believed to be on million-pound salaries, are among staff that could be at risk of losing their jobs.

However MailOnline has been told that it would be ‘very unlikely that presenters would be effected in any cuts’.

A source said: ‘During lockdown radio has seen a boom and listening figures for our shows are are up, it would be very unlikely that presenters would be effected in any cuts.

‘However, unfortunately the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic means some restructuring is required but it won’t really effect brands, more operators around the business.’

It is thought that staff potentially in the firing line will told if they’re keeping their job in August, reports The Sun.

A Global spokesperson explained that ‘restructuring’ has been partly due to the ‘unprecedented circumstances and challenges precipitated by coronavirus’.

They added: ‘This will, sadly, include some people leaving the company. These decisions are never easy.’

However a source revealed to the Sun that all staff at the radio company have been told they are at risk of losing their jobs, even those on ‘big bucks’.

They added: ‘Ad revenue is down and also there’s no money coming in from the billboard firms that cost so much cash to buy in 2018.’

MailOnline has contacted Global and the radio DJ’s representatives for comment.

Chris Moyles, who previously worked on Radio 1’s Breakfast show, was confirmed as the presenter for newly rebranded Radio X in 2015.

It is thought that he is paid around £1.5million for this prime-time show while DJ Johnny Vaughan, who has a drive-time slot also on Radio X, gets around £1million.

Meanwhile Jamie Theakston is said to be paid £1.2million for his morning show on Heart which he presents alongside Amanda Holden.

Their Breakfast show is the biggest commercial radio show in the UK – with 4.6 million listeners tuning in during 2019.

It comes after Chris said he managed to lose weight by ditching bread and booze, taking part in five-day detoxes and embarking on a strict fitness regime.

He attributed his former unhealthy lifestyle to working early morning shifts for Radio 1’s Breakfast Show, as it meant he would often eat junk food while working.

Calling his time on the show his ‘fat breakfast DJ stage’, the radio personality was previously said to rarely exercise and would often eat multiple takeaways a day.
