He’s passionate about music and the environment.

So it’s no wonder Australian singer Cody Simpson has joined forces with WWF-Australia as the organisation’s first Ambassador for Oceans.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday, Cody, 23, said: ‘Protecting and conserving our oceans is something I have been passionate about my whole life.’

‘Growing up as a swimmer and surfer on the Gold Coast, I’ve always felt a strong affinity to the ocean,’ he continued.

‘I’m excited to work together to protect the ocean I know and love and get really hands on with some of the amazing projects that WWF are working on.’

The California based singer’s first project with the organisation is Don’t Let Nature Go To Waste, in an attempt to promote sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics.

With Cody unable to return to Australia due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the singer has urged Aussies to do their bit for the environment.

‘When international travel is allowed, I’m excited to return home and go behind the scenes and really get hands on with the work they’re doing,’ he said.

The blond singer-songwriter and poet said regardless of where he is in the world, the ocean remains a constant in his life and helps me feel calm and grounded.

Kicking off the campaign the La Da Dee singer nominated his famous friends Tash Sultana, Mason Barnes and Jack Johnson to participate in a #PlasticFree shop.

It comes as he recently revealed that he’s been sober ever since finding love with his new girlfriend, Miley Cyrus. 

Cody uploaded a video of himself dancing which prompted one fan to ask Cody: ‘[On a] scale of 1 to 10 how sober are you?’ ‘DEAD SOBER believe it or not,’ he replied.

 1. BYO shopping and produce bags

2. Don’t buy food in pre-portioned packaging – buy in bulk instead

3. Buy loose fruits and veggies – skip the plastic packaging

4. Swap out the cling wrap for beeswax wraps or containers

5. Buy your meat or cheese from the deli and ask to use your own container

6. Buy refills – instead of buying a new product each time

7. Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo toothbrush

8. Buy a bar of soap rather than plastic bottle dispenser

9. Swap out plastic soda drinks for a reusable soda dispenser

10. Buy fresh bread from local bakeries – in a reusable bag

11. When ordering groceries online, contact your retailer and ask them to reduce the amount of plastic they use
