‘I fully intend to keep my promise’: Boy George confirms he will re-record hit song with teenage fan after meeting her on The Voice Australia

The Voice coach Boy George has confirmed he will re-record one of his hit songs with a teenage super-fan he met on the show.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph this week, the singer said he’s looking forward to his recording session with Lucy Griffiths, 17, after she auditioned for The Voice with an opera-style rendition of Culture Club song Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?

‘I fully intend to keep my promise to Lucy,’ Boy George told the publication.

‘It may take a little longer to happen due to current events, but it will happen,’ he said, referring to COVID-19.

During her audition, Lucy wore a Boy George T-shirt as she belted out an opera version of ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?’

The stunning rendition of his song left George awestruck, even though he was unable to turn his chair because his team was full.

‘Let me just tell you, I thought you were fantastic. I would have turned for you if I had space. Completely,’ he told her.

George told Lucy that the song she performed was ‘deeply, deeply personal’ to him, but he ‘loved’ her rendition and called it ‘so beautiful’.

‘It wasn’t perfect, but what you did was so cool and clever,’ he told her, before offering to ‘help’ her.

George then took her hand and led her off the stage, explaining that he wanted to re-record Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? with her.

Lucy was clearly starstruck, telling the music icon: ‘My room has Boy George posters all over the walls, and then I have Culture Club vinyls, books of Boy George.’

Speaking to Lucy’s family backstage, he added: ‘I’m just saying to her, I actually mean what I said. I’m actually doing this. It’s not just a TV moment for me.’

The Voice continues Sunday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine
