Ellen DeGeneres vows to ‘amplify voices of black people’ as her show wins big at Daytime Emmy Awards

Ellen DeGeneres declared she would ‘amplify voices of black people and people of color’ on her show as it won big at Friday’s Daytime Emmy Awards.

The virtual ceremony was hosted this Friday by Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond of The Talk.

‘I have been doing the show for 17 years and we have a few more to go,’ said Ellen, 62, who is the recipient of 31 Daytime Emmys.

Her program won best entertainment talk show against The Talk, GMA3: Strahan, Sara and Keke, The Kelly Clarkson Show and Live With Kelly And Ryan.

‘If anything has become clear over the last month or so, it’s that we can do a lot more with the platform that we’re given,’ she shared.

‘I intend to use the next two years of my show as a platform for change, to amplify voices of black people and people of color and to educate my audience.’

She continued: ‘I am always grateful to be able to do what I do but more than ever I just feel like this is a responsibility to effect change.’

‘You know, my mom was a teacher,’ she said, quipping: ‘that’s not always the greatest ting for a kid who’s always getting in trouble for talking to much.’ 

She dished that she ‘got a lot of talking-tos but look, Mom, it paid off, and we’re winners right now so talking got me to winning.’

Kelly said that her show highlights ‘real people making real change – on the show we call them good neighbors and rad humans but really they’re the helpers.’

While celebrating her victory on Twitter she also warmly offered her gratitude to her estranged husband Brandon Blackstock.

She said ‘Thank you so much’ to her ex ‘for believing in me & convincing me to do @KellyClarksonTV show,’ and also showered praise on her assistant Tricia Farrow.

Tamara Braun dedicated her best supporting actress gong for General Hospital ‘to those who have suffered at the hands of racial inequality’ in addition to those who ‘fight’ in the pursuit of ‘justice.’

Bryton James won best supporting actor for The Young And The Restless and chose to ‘dedicate this to the legend, Kristoff St. John,’ his late co-star.

Kristoff died at the age of 55 last year of hypertrophic heart disease with alcohol as a contributing element, according to USA Today.

During his speech Bryton also said ‘the world is fighting against racial injustice and it is our responsibility as the human race to educate ourselves and take action,’ arguing that otherwise ‘there will always be a problem.’

She stressed that ‘mental health is such a crucial and underaddressed topic in this world’ and hoped she had ‘done my job as a human and an actress’ by drawing attention to the subject with her Days Of Our Lives character.

Kevin Frazier gave a speech in which he noted that because of coronavirus he was responsible for his own camerawork, wardrobe, makeup and so forth.

He dished that ‘as a former cameraman I’m pretty proud of the job I did – but let’s be honest it’s kind of average, because there are paid professionals who do all these things really, really well.’

Kevin told the professionals that ‘we miss you, adding that they ‘are standing in solidarity with you’ and looking forward to their reunion.

As the show wore on Eve introduced a throwback clip of the late great Aretha Franklin discussing her love of The Young And The Restless.

In the video, which was shown at the 1997 Daytime Emmys, Aretha gushed: ‘Victor is one of my favorite characters in The Young And The Restless. I love the way he makes his approach to a woman. He’s the all-time player, okay?’

Eric Braeden who played Victor Newman on The Young And The Restless recorded a new speech for this year’s Daytime Emmys about that moment.

‘The one and only Aretha Franklin. You know when I saw that clip at the Emmys, I thought: “All those years of learning those lines, learning those pages of dialogue are wroth it. If Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, the civil rights icon, watches our show I can bloody well learn lines and do the best I can.’

When The People’s Court won its host Judge Milian said: ‘I’m so psyched to be a part of the show that created the genre.’
