The Daily Edition AXED: Sally Obermeder and Ryan Phelan departing Channel Seven after the news and lifestyle show is scrapped

Channel Seven’s The Daily Edition has been axed, it was revealed on Friday. 

The scrapping of the news and lifestyle program will leave Sally Obermeder and Ryan Phelan out of a job, with The Daily Telegraph reporting that they will both depart the network after the final show airs this week. 

Seven Director of News and Public Affairs Craig McPherson said in a statement: The Daily Edition found its way onto the TV landscape seven years ago and has performed exceptionally over that time.

‘Sadly though, the economics of today and associated cost pressures across the entire industry has led to this decision.

‘I want to thank co-hosts Sally Obermeder and Ryan Phelan and the talented production team for all their efforts.’ 

Further, McPherson attributed the cancellation to ‘these difficult times’ in reference the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show, which has been on the air since 2013, had received steady ratings during its time on air. 

It boasted a weekday average audience of 176,000 viewers nationally in recent years.   

Sally had been hosting The Daily Edition since its inception in 2013, while Ryan joined the program in 2016.

The show features a combination of live breaking news, as well as interviews with celebrities and entertainment updates.

In February, the program’s set received a much-needed makeover.

The weekday program’s gaudy blue set was a running joke in the industry and widely considered one of the ugliest on television, according to TV Tonight.

Ryan said at the time: 'New set. New attitude! [Sally] and I loved debuting the fresh @dailyeditionon7 surroundings - the first of many exciting additions.'

‘Could not be more proud to be a part of this show with this team,’ Sally wrote on Instagram.

The show’s logo had also been updated, going from a purple emblem to a yellow and blue circle.
