The Voice: Kelly Rowland throws her support behind Black Lives Matter

With anti-police brutality protests raging across America, Kelly Rowland is using her social media platform to join the revolutionary movement.

The Voice Australia coach, 39, has been an outspoken advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement on Instagram in recent weeks.

Protests swept the U.S. after George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man, was killed in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.

All four police officers involved in the incident have since been arrested. Derek Chauvin, the officer directly responsible for Floyd’s death, has been charged with second-degree murder.

But the protests have continued, and Kelly has been using social media to advocate for change and equality for the black community.

On Sunday, the Destiny’s Child singer shared a photo of former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, declaring it #ObamaDay.

Speaking out: Last week, she fought for justice for Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American paramedic, who was shot dead by police while asleep in her home in Louisville on March 13

The post was a directed at incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has contributed to the racial tensions, and who celebrated his 74th birthday on Sunday.

Last week, she also fought for justice for Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American paramedic, who was shot dead by police while asleep in her home in Louisville on March 13.

‘Do you know what happened to #BreonnaTaylor? I want answers, and so should you! We must continue to fight!’ Kelly wrote on Instagram, adding: ‘Keep the pressure on. Together we can get justice for #BreonnaTaylor.’

On June 3, Kelly shared a video of a man talking about how African-Americans have been ‘systemically dehumanised and oppressed’, and captioned it: ‘THAT part.’

That same day, she also shared a video of a woman talking about how the viral black tile posts on Instagram had inadvertently silenced the black community, and wrote: ‘Listen to every word she says!’ 

Kelly has also been urging her followers to vote in the U.S. primary elections, with the federal election taking place at the end of the year.

‘LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!’ she implored her fans.

On June 2, Kelly shared a video of the white community kneeling down in front of the black community ‘to ask for forgiveness after years of racism’. She captioned it with a praise hands emoji.

She also shared a statement from her friend Jay-Z on June 1, asking for justice following George Floyd’s death.

‘I am more determined to fight for justice than any fight my would-be oppressors may have,’ he wrote.

‘I am a human, a father and a black man in pain, and I am not the only one.’ 

Also on June 1, Kelly hinted at the emotional toll of the BLM movement when she shared a post that read: ‘Faith tells me that no matter what lies ahead of me, God is already there.’

She captioned it: ‘Amen! I needed to be reminded of my faith, I never really lose faith in GOD, LIKE EVER. But, with all that’s going on, I do look up at him, like… what are you doing? 

‘And I lose faith in people, our system. And for a minute, I lost it. Can’t lie, the past couple days! 

‘But, that’s what EVIL wants me to believe. AND I AM not gonna believe that! I’m gonna do all that I can for my son, my brothers and sisters through Christ. And all using their voices!

Kelly has also joined protesters asking for police departments to be defunded across the United States.

On May 30, she said she was prepared to ‘lose friends’ over her remarks, as she continued to fight for civil rights.
