He said: ‘The message from this lady said she wanted to end it all. My heart was in my mouth. I couldn’t ignore it and stopped everything, contacted the woman and she was indeed in a great deal of trouble.

‘She was in her own house and was in a bad way. So I told her that if she was at risk, I’d need to contact the authorities — the police, the ambulance, everything.

‘I let her know the severity of what was about to happen and I think, for her, that was a relief. She wanted to be heard, to be listened to.’

Matt added that after speaking the woman for 20 minutes, she began to ‘calm down’ and said she signed off because she felt loved.

The Eighties icon said that he checked on the woman a number of times afterward and she told him that she was in a different place and feels heard and loved.

The woman, who the publication referred to as Hannah, said she was having a really bad day and was at her wits end but Matt reminded her she is important and matters.

She described him as a ‘true gentleman’ and someone who really cares about other people, adding that she will be forever grateful to him.

Matt and his brother Luke formed their group Bros in the 1980s, earning eight top 10 hits and a number one album.

They received a new fan base after their 2018 documentary Bros: After The Screaming Stops, was released, which Matt admitted also attracted mockery.

The film crew documented the siblings as they tried to repair their bond after a decade of minimal contact.

And while emotional in parts, the brothers’ unintentionally hilarious one liners, including Matt saying Stevie Wonder had inspired him not to be ‘superstitious’, have had viewers in stitches and made it a fan favourite for very different reasons than the reunion.

In one memorable scene from the film, Matt raved about the game conkers, which he thought had been banned in England.

Matt previously said that he was ‘enjoying’ fans’ response to the documentary and said, ‘I’m laughing back at them too. Positively.’

While the singer accepts the film was edited for ‘maximum effect’, he feels it was an authentic portrayal of him and Luke and forced them to work out their differences.

Before their 2017 reunion, Bros were originally together from 1986 to 1992 and sold 16million records worldwide.
