Cate posed in the gardens of her country estate in East Sussex, England, for the photograph Fiona used as inspiration.

Her playwright husband Andrew Upton took the image in early May.

Vogue editor Edwina McCann said: ‘We had the idea during lockdown about how do you create a cover that is somewhat reflective of what we’ve all been through but still feels collectible and special for readers.’

It then took two weeks to create the stunning painted portrait.

The finished painting shows the two-time Oscar-winner in a floral frock while basking in the sun with her eyes closed.

Edwina said she wanted to publish a cover that understood the current moment in time, referring to the global coronavirus pandemic.

‘I think that if you’ve got the privilege of continuing to publish, especially in print as a magazine through this period, then you want to be putting something on people’s doorstep that feels like it’s a curated moment in time.’
