Grand Designs Kevin McCloud makes a hilarious spoof of his popular TV show using cardboard models

Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud has created a hilarious spoof of his popular TV show using cardboard models while self isolating at home

He’s the design guru whose dulcet tones can be heard narrating the UK version of Grand Designs.

And Kevin McCloud has found a very unique way to keep himself occupied while he isolates at his home in Bath, England – by poking fun at himself and the award-winning program.

The 60-year-old told the Gold Coast Bulletin on Friday that he has created an alter ego named Barry Tomkins and has been filming a spoof show using small model homes made from cardboard.

‘The concept of it is that Barry is into model railways… so he buys an old railway station and he’s building a modern conversion on the back,’ he said.

The train station appearing in the humorous four-minute video is made from a ‘cardboard kit’ Kevin knocked up himself.

But just because it’s filmed in Kevin’s spare room doesn’t mean it’s not a professional quality product.

‘You can’t make a spoof Grand Designs and make it on your iPhone,’ he said.

‘The production values of this thing are so high … it’s so beautifully put together and great to watch that in the end I had to script it … I’ve got a professional camera, so I could shoot it well and light it as best I could.’

The property expert said both Sydney and Melbourne had become too dense to offer exciting opportunities for growth and new buildings, The Herald Sun reported.

In comparison, the ‘garden city’ of Canberra was full of wide-open spaces and had a thriving CBD with a mix of offices, houses and workshops.

‘It hasn’t been overdeveloped so it has potential,’ he said.

‘There’s a mix of houses, offices and workshops and the planning constraints have been relaxed to allow that mix.’
