‘Everyone was freaking out!’ Lady Gaga reveals she caused mass panic when she wore $28million diamond to TACO BELL after the Oscars

Lady Gaga caused security guards to ‘freak out’ when she wore a $28 million Tiffany & Co diamond necklace to Taco Bell after the Oscars in 2019.

The singer and actress, 34, recounted the tale during Friday’s episode of The Graham Norton Show as she told how she visited the fast food chain after ‘barrelling through champagne backstage’ with her sister.

Joining the BBC One chat show host on his ‘virtual sofa’, the Bad Romance hitmaker explained how she celebrated after winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song with Shallow from the film A Star Is Born.

The musician – real name Stefani Germanotta – was loaned the legendary 128-carat yellow diamond for the night by the luxury jewellery company.

Gaga explained: ‘I didn’t know what was going to happen that night – I was just so happy to be there.

‘My sister and I were barrelling through champagne backstage and when we left, I didn’t tell anyone, and I still had the diamond on.

‘Everyone freaked out that I was still wearing it – when I went to Madonna’s house, security guards were side-eyeing me and eventually, when we were heading to Taco Bell, my car was pulled over and Tiffany’s security politely removed it from my neck!’

The diamond, first discovered in South Africa over 140 years ago by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, was last worn by Audrey Hepburn during the Breakfast At Tiffany’s press tour in 1961.

Lady Gaga was nominated for two Oscars in 2019 – one for Best Actress in A Star Is Born and one for Best Original Song, which she won.

While speaking about the success of the movie, which she starred in alongside Bradley Cooper who also directed the movie, she said: ‘It’s pretty crazy.

‘I was so proud of the whole project and making the soundtrack was my baby, so it’s been pretty cool.’

The soundtrack to the hit movie, which raked in $436.2million at the box office, was in the charts for 64 weeks.

Gaga was also asked about her new album, Chromatica, and whether it was odd to launch it during lockdown.

She said: ‘I am so excited – I’ve been making it for two and half years. It’s not odd.

‘What is odd is being in the middle of a global pandemic! It is the way it is, and we don’t always get to have things go the way that we see them in life.

‘I’ve always had instilled in me that life can, and will, get very hard, so it’s very important to roll with the punches and deal with it.’

Talking about working with Ariana Grande on her recent release Rain On Me, she said: ‘She has been through so much, so the song was done in the spirit of working and coming together to make magic out of the rain – so bring it on!’

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One at 10.45pm. Also available on BBC iPlayer.
