Johnny Vegas puffs on a cigarette as he takes a break during supply run in St. Helens… months after quitting his 60 a day habit (with some help from Madonna!)

Johnny Vegas proved that old habits die hard on Tuesday afternoon as he was pictured puffing on a cigarette, almost a year after apparently quitting his 60 a day vice.

The comedian, who has been doing his bit to help out during the UK lockdown by delivering supplies, stopped for a fag break during an appearance in his native St. Helens.

Johnny, 49, previously admitted he gave up the unhealthy habit with some unlikely assistance from pop legend Madonna, whose hit Lucky Star he danced to for ten seconds whenever he craved a cigarette.

But Bryan Ferry’s Smoke Gets In Your Eyes appeared to be a more appropriate soundtrack on Tuesday as the Benidorm star succumbed to his cravings while seated outside local boutique hotel The Eccleston Arms.

Taking about his decision to quit smoking with the help of Madonna’s eighties classic in November, he told the Daily Star: ‘Every time I seriously consider having a cigarette I make myself dance for at least 10 seconds to her Lucky Star hit.

‘It’s not a good look for me and does actually help bolster the social embarrassment bit of my brain while it fights its corner against addiction.’

Don't mind me: Johnny was easily recognisable beneath his flat cap as he took a well earned break during his latest supply run in the Merseyside town

The much-loved comedian has teamed up with local organisations The Steve Prescott Foundation and the Blackbrook rugby league team to ensure needy residents are getting their essentials during the ongoing lockdown.

Johnny’s involvement was recently highlighted by Hollywood star Russell Crowe, a longtime friend, who used his social media standing to promote his charitable efforts.

Taking to Twitter with a short video in March, he said:  ‘G’day folks, how are you doing? This is a message on behalf of my old mate Johnny Vegas.

‘If you’re in the St Helens area and you’re having trouble getting food deliveries from your local supermarket, if you’re NHS staff, a key worker, elderly, isolating, vulnerable, call this number – O1744 881881.

‘The Steve Prescott Foundation and the Blackbrook rugby league team have set up a delivery service and they can help you out, they can pick up your shopping, they can maybe even pick up your medicine.

‘One of the delivery workers is going be Johnny Vegas though, so expect to lose every second or third biscuit.”
