James Cameron and wife Suzy Amis file to become legal guardians of daughter’s 16-year-old friend
- The 65-year-old filmmaker and 58-year-old environmental advocate have filed a petition to become guardians of a 16-year-old girl who is close friends with one of their daughters
- The petition was filed in Los Angeles Superior court says the girl had previously lived with her parents in New York until September of last year

- The documents state that the minor has been living with their family for months and that the teenager’s parents allowed her to come live with them and attend a private school in Calabasas in September 2019
- They also say that the girl’s parents and grandparents are in agreement with the Hollywood couple petitioning for guardianship
- The couple married in 2000 and have three kids together as Amis is Cameron’s fifth wife
Avatar director James Cameron and his wife Suzy Amis have officially filed to become legal guardians of their daughter’s 16-year-old friend.
The Blast reported on Tuesday that the 65-year-old filmmaker and 58-year-old environmental advocate have filed a petition to become guardians of a 16-year-old girl who is close friends with one of their daughters.
It remains unclear which child is companions with the teenager but the couple have two daughters 19-year-old Claire and 13-year-old Elizabeth as well as 16-year-old son Quinn.

The petition obtained by the publication was filed in Los Angeles Superior court says the girl had previously lived with her parents in New York until September of last year.
Cameron said in the document that her parents ‘unfortunately began experiencing health challenges and financial hardships approximately one and a half years ago rendering them increasingly unable to care’ for the teenager.
The girl’s parents have since separated and are each living in different states as the director says they are homeless at the moment and suffer substance abuse issues.

No doubt Cameron and Amis’s daughter and pal share a close bond as they say they have been friends for four years according to the documents.
The Titanic director claims they maintained a ‘close friendship, connecting online daily and even visiting each other in their respective hometowns’ despite living in separate states.
As a result Cameron and Amis have also developed a close bond with the minor due to their friendship.

Cameron claims that the minor has been with them ‘Since September 2019, other than a six-week trip’ to New Jersey.
The couple say that they have provided a stable home environment and ‘cared for her as one of their own children’ for the minor.
They also say that the girl’s parents and grandparents are in agreement with the Hollywood couple petitioning for guardianship.
Things seem to be going well as it has been said that the teenager ‘is thriving in Petitioners’ care and she wishes to continue to be cared for by Petitioners.’

Cameron and Amis also explain in the documents that they need the court to approve the petition to be able to ‘travel out of state and internationally with the minor’ in addition to other legal purposes.
The couple married in 2000 and have three kids together as Amis is Cameron’s fifth wife.
He was previously married to Sharon Williams from 1978 to 1984 before marrying film producer and collaborator Gale Anne Hurd a year later before divorcing in 1989;.

He then began a relationship with Linda Hamilton whom he directed in The Terminator series as they had a child together in 1993 before marrying in 1997 and split after two years of marriage.
Amis was previously married to 58-year-old actor Sam Robards from 1986 to 1994. They share a 30-year-old son named Jasper together.
Meanwhile Cameron is optimistic about a December 2021 release for the highly anticipated Avatar sequel.
