Today host Karl Stefanovic says he can’t wait for lockdown to end so he can ‘go to a pub and have a schnitty with chips that’s smothered in gravy’

Karl Stefanovic is craving a pub meal now that lockdown restrictions have started to ease as Australia successfully flattens the coronavirus curve.

Speaking to his Today show colleague Brooke Boney in an Instagram Live video on Friday, the 45-year-old breakfast TV host revealed his self-isolation cravings.

‘I can’t wait to go to a pub and have a basic XXXX Gold, ice cold, or a Carlton Draught, and then just sit there and have a schnitty [chicken schnitzel] with chips that’s smothered in gravy,’ he said.

Karl, who appeared in a bathrobe with a towel wrapped around his head, revealed he had been practising his culinary skills in lockdown.

He also told Brooke, 33, he’d just been down to his local Chargrill Charlie’s chicken shop, which was packed with people on the first day of restrictions being lifted.

Brooke then said it was important to support small businesses in the aftermath of the global health crisis.

‘Every time I order chips and gravy to the house, I whisper “hero” to myself, because I’m just out there doing my bit to support the local industries. I’ll order as many chicken nuggets and chips and gravy as I need to!’ she joked.

Karl told the entertainment reporter she was being ‘selfless’, before revealing he couldn’t wait to indulge in some pub food and a cold beer.

He also said he was in the process of preparing a Mexican fiesta for his Friday dinner.

‘I’m going to do margaritas, and I went and got this pork belly that I’m going to slowly cook this afternoon, and then I’ll chop it up and put it in burritos, with sour cream and avocados and all that sort of stuff,’ he said.

Karl had also crisped some bacon in the sandwich press for his wife, Jasmine Yarbrough, but he said he wouldn’t recommend the method.

He said it was actually quite dangerous, because the sandwich press ‘lit up [from] all the bacon fat’ the next time he used it.
