James and Ola Jordan admit it’s ‘surreal’ parenting for the first time in lockdown

They welcomed their first child together, a daughter called Ella, in February after a painful three-year battle with infertility.

And James and Ola Jordan have admitted that parenting for the first time during the COVID-19 lockdown has been ‘surreal’ and that they ‘panic’ about everything.

The former Strictly Come Dancing stars, aged 42 and 37, appeared on Thursday’s Loose Women via video with little Ella, now three months, where they also discussed her recent hospital stint for silent reflux.

Ola said: ‘It’s quite surreal actually, surreal having a newborn and not knowing what you’re doing right or doing wrong is really strange, you just want to ask questions to your friends or family or your sister.’

James added: ‘We do it on FaceTime but it’s not the same, you want to reassure someone who has done it and say it’s normal.’

Talking about Ella’s recent stint in hospital for silent reflux, Ola said: ‘She was five weeks when she started to choke on her own saliva, and it got to the point of the evening it was really quite bad.’

James continued: ‘We rang 111 and asked for their advice, they said we feel we should send an ambulance.

‘First of all we were like, “We don’t want to go into hospital”, but then the ambulance guys came in full PPE and said we need to take her into hospital just for a check up, and we did, otherwise we wouldn’t have slept anyway.’

Ola said that the symptoms were a sign of silent reflux and they have to hold Ella upright for 30 minutes after every feed.

The couple welcomed their daughter just days before lockdown and she was only able to meet certain members of the family before the government regulations.

Ola admitted that she has been struggling with the distance, she said: ‘I panic about everything and over-analyse everything, so I’m watching her saying why is she doing that?

‘Just being able to go for a coffee and see other people, I just think it makes everything a lot easier.’

Talking about how much their life has changed, Ola said: ‘Life is going to be totally different for us, we’ve wanted that for a long time and I think we’re so ready to have this different life. So we have admiration for everyone with children.

‘I don’t want her to change, she’s giving us about five hours [of sleep]. And then she was restless for about an hour and a half and then went down until 9. Sometimes I have a little dance with her, my little girl.’

James and Ola also admitted they won’t be trying for a second child until they know what is happening with the COVID-19 crisis and lockdown.

Ola said: ‘I think in an ideal world we’d like to have a bigger family, we don’t know if it’s going to happen, and obviously being on lockdown now, I don’t know how it would happen again.’

To which James added: ‘I don’t think we’d try and have children until we know what’s happened with the COVID-19 situation.’

James also joked about his tousled locks and revealed that he was growing his hair out for fun during lockdown. He quipped: ‘I know I look awful I know I’ve aged about 30 years!’

Talking about the future of Strictly after several reality shows have been cancelled or postponed due to the crisis, James joked: ‘Wow there will be a lot more relationships going on won’t there.

‘You could make like a second show with them all and the arguments, it would be like Big Brother meets Strictly Come Dancing.’

Loose Women continues on weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
