Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent co-star Elle Fanning dresses up as Brad Pitt

While filming her Hulu series The Great, Elle Fanning and her co-stars would often partake in the the Doppelgänger Challenge as a way to pass time on set.

And during her appearance on Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show, the 22-year-old actress stunned fans when she showed off her impressive Brad Pitt transformation.

‘That’s me. That’s Brad Pitt in his beard bead phase when he wore beard beads,’ explained Fanning to host Jimmy Fallon – who could hardly believe his eyes.

Elle – who co-starred with Brad’s ex Angelina Jolie in two Maleficent films – aimed her iPhone at her webcam so that Fallon and the show’s viewers could get a closer look at the side-by-side comparison she made of herself and Brad.

Fanning’s transformation required her to mimic the Academy Award winner’s long beard with beads in it as well as his unique personal aesthetic at the time.

She sported similar sunglasses, a grey beanie, and a black jacket, which took her look to the next level and made it hard for people to determine who was who. 

Pitt debuted his bead beard back in 2010 and it has since become a questionable part of the actor’s style timeline. 

‘Basically [the cast of The Great] would do this on set, it was called the Doppelgänger Challenge and, like, the set of The Crown did it as well,’ explained Elle.

She explained that it was an ongoing competition between the cast of The Great and the cast of the Netflix series The Crown, who happened to utilize the same makeup designer on their sets.

The rival casts were required to come up with their best Doppelgänger looks based on real life celebrities and/or fictional characters from TV and film.

‘Our makeup designer did The Crown, so she was like — we were in competition with them and we totally won,’ expressed Fanning confidently.  

‘We went all out, the cast. Like, we had this group chat, going dressed up as celebrities, people from, you know, different characters in film.’

Elle showed off another one of her personal favorite looks, which required her to transform into Daniel Day-Lewis’s iconic character from the 2002 crime-drama Gangs Of New York.

‘I did Brad Pitt, but I also did Bill The Butcher,’ said Fanning as she flashed her phone screen in the direction of her webcam.

‘Oh my gosh,’ exclaimed Jimmy, while Elle chuckled uncontrollably. 

The photo showed Fanning wearing an impressive replica of Daniel’s look, which included the character’s bow tie, red jacket, and infamous top hat. 

‘Bill The Butcher. Oh my gosh, how great is that costume?! The hat and everything,’ continued Fallon. 

Fanning’s series The Great is set to premiere on Hulu on May 15 and the actress and is Fanning’s television debut.

‘How do you compare working on a TV series as opposed to a film,’ asked Fallon.

‘You know, I felt that it wasn’t too different, but the amount of time – we filmed for six months in London – you have so much more time to develop the character.’

She also emphasized that spending so much time with her co-stars on set allowed for them to form a strong familial bond.

The Great is a ‘genre-bending, anti-historical’ drama set in Russia in the 18th-century and follows Catherine The Great’s – played by Fanning – rise to power.

The series also stars Warm Bodies actor Nicholas Hoult as the hilariously inept and unashamedly misogynistic Peter III of Russia.
