Hollywood on Netflix: Was Peg Entwistle real? The tragedy of the Hollywood sign actress | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The incoming Hays Code – or the Motion Picture Production Code – a set of moral guidelines adopted by the major Hollywood studios during this time, led Thirteen Women’s running time to be cut down significantly.

In turn, Entwistle’s big break on the big screen never came when her part was drastically reduced.

At this time, the bite of the Great Depression was being felt in America and Entwistle found her contract with her studio not renewed and low on money.

A month before the film’s release, Entwistle took her own life, jumping to her death from the H of the Hollywood sign. She died at the age of 24.

Hollywood’s creator Murphy said of Entwistle’s tragic story: “She came here, tried to make it big. She actually got a break. She actually filmed a great part.”

He added: “And she thought, ‘Well, I’m never going to get an opportunity again.’ And so that was it.”
