Narcos Mexico: What happened to Sofia Conesa? Why did Tessa Ia leave Narcos? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Narcos Mexico fans will remember the important role Sofia Conesa (played by Tessa Ia) had in the first series of the show. However, viewers did not see her again in the second outing, leaving some to wonder what exactly happened to her.

What happened to Sofia Conesa in Narcos Mexico?

In the first season of Narcos Mexico, the story focused on how Rafael Caro Quintero (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) co-founded the Guadalajara cartel with Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo (Diego Luna).

To tell this story on the hit Netflix series, the show also introduced Quintero’s love interest Sofia Conesa.

The pair first met in a ballroom when Rafa invited her to dance with him before they embarked on an affair.

As fans will remember, her father was the Secretary of Education in the early 1980s as well as part of the PRI party.

Before she began dating Rafa she had been studying at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara but gave this up to live with him.

The pair were very much in love in the series and when her family threatened to break them up, they even staged a fake kidnapping.

Taking her from her family home, Rafa then moved her into his house much to Felix’s annoyance when their acts almost exposed the cartel he was building.

However, later in the series, things took a turn for the worse for the couple.

The storyline did have some element of truth in it but Rafa’s real girlfriend was called Sara Cosio.

According to Playboy, the pair did stage a kidnapping and Sara’s family were also involved in politics.

Although it has not been reported what happened to the real-life inspiration after Rafa was arrested.

The real Rafa was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the death of Kiki but in 2013 he was released on appeal by the Mexican court.

While another warrant for his arrest was soon ordered, he disappeared and has not been seen since.

The US is currently offering a reward of up to $20 million for his capture.

As to why Sofia actor Tessa Ia left Narcos Mexico, she has never revealed an exact reason.

However, it seems her storyline on the show had just reached its end.

This is especially the case as season two focused instead on DEA officer Walt Breslin’s (Scoot McNairy) investigation into Gallardo as well as the drug cartel leader’s eventual downfall.

Narcos Mexico is available to stream on Netflix now.
