She wrote: “Georgie got the closure she so desperately needed… ‘All is well in the world’ ❤️.”

Viewers tonight saw the character track down the man who killed her boyfriend Elvis – but refused to shoot him.

Earlier in the night, Michelle made a rare appearance on Instagram addressing fans of the BBC drama for backing her in the role.

She said she would – and explaining she had to do it before the show because she would be “too emotional” afterwards.

Earlier in the night she thanked Our Girls fans for sticking with the drama

Michelle said: “Hi guys, horrible day today, so I thought I’d quickly come on to say hi. I have got a filter on because I look horrendous, I don’t think I’ve washed my hair for a week.

“But, I wanted to say thank you so much for all your support so far regarding Our Girl, I really appreciate it. It’s the final episode tonight. It starts at 9pm on BBC One and I hope you enjoy it.”

Fans had been worried that the soldier would be killed off in a dramatic final scene, but she made it to the end in one piece – just.

The Sun revealed in January that Michelle was stepping down from the series and the role of Army medic Georgie.

She left in a bid to pursue new acting jobs and plans to spend more time at home in the UK after her husband Mark Wright, also 32, moved back from Los Angeles last year.

Michelle said: “I’ve had the most incredible four years on the show and I want to thank the BBC for giving me such an amazing opportunity.

“Playing Georgie has been a life changing role for me. I’ve loved every second of the adventure so it was a very hard decision to make not to return.

“I feel it is the right time to explore other exciting opportunities but I’m so happy to be part of the new series coming soon so it’s not the end just yet.”

Producers are currently looking for another female to play the lead in the hit series, which starred former EastEnders actress Lacey Turner, 32, for its first run in 2014.
