At the end of season 15, Meredith committed insurance fraud to save a girl’s life who was seeking asylum but had no health insurance.
During the first half of series 16, the consequences of her actions began to unfold.
Actress Pompeo about the storyline when asked what was her favourite from this series in an Instagram Live interview with Variety.
She said: “One thing that [showrunner] Krista [Vernoff] and I talk a lot about is, as subtly as we can on a network soapy drama, to call out our healthcare system and the problems with it.
“We were able to have a storyline that dealt with a young, undocumented child not having health insurance, [and that] was a storyline that Krista and I felt really grateful to be able to tell.”
