‘I really do take my platform seriously’: Actress Miranda Tapsell talks about being a role model and having the courage to ask for what she wants

Miranda Tapsell has spoken about being a role model, admitting it’s a responsibility she doesn’t take lightly.

Appearing on The Project on Monday to promote her autobiography, Top End Girl, the 32-year-old actress said she tries to use her public profile ‘for good’.

‘I really do take my platform seriously. I always want to use my platform for good so if it I get to amplify voices that don’t get heard I’m willing to do that,’ she said.

And The Sapphires star said she’s gotten better at speaking out and asking for what she wants as she gets older.

‘I found it really hard in my early 20s to really ask for things, and I guess on this journey that I’ve been on, I’ve learnt that the worse thing that people can do, particularly in my position, is to be told no,’ she said.

The petite actress joked that some of her feistiness may derive from her stature and having a need to prove herself.

‘Maybe my short woman complex has come through, as well! I’m constantly like, “No, you can find me, you can see me, I’m here!” So I think that sort of comes in as well,’ she laughed.

Despite her young age, Miranda said it felt like the right time to release her memoir, because ‘a lot of huge things have happened in this time for me’.

She revealed she wrote and starred in last year’s romantic comedy, Top End Wedding, around the same time she was getting married in real life.

Describing the timing of it all as ‘ambitious’, the busy actress said she wrote her autobiography ‘on planes and trains and everywhere else’.

And with people across the country currently in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Miranda said she hopes her book brings people ‘joy’.

‘I know that it is a weird time to promote something, but I hope that it brings a bit of joy into people’s homes,’ she added.
