Van Der Valk: ITV viewers ‘perplexed’ by drama over lack of Dutch accents | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Excitement levels among crime genre fans couldn’t have been higher for the ITV remake of 70s drama Van Der Valk. Marc Warren took the mantle from actor Barry Foster in the leading role as the Amsterdam-based, no-nonsense detective in the new series as the drama is given a modern-day revamp.

However, with Van Der Valk taking place solely in the Dutch capital city, some viewers felt the remake left something to be desired.

Several viewers took particular issue with the lack of local accents in the ITV drama.

In fact, some were so distracted by it, they took to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

One said: “I’m a little perplexed by #VanDerValk. Have I woke up suddenly being able to speak Dutch or is everyone English?

“Might have well called it something else and based it in a town in the UK!”

A fourth suggested: “I’d have rather watched an updated #VanDerValk in Dutch with English subtitles for a more genuine atmosphere.”

And a fifth pointed out: “They aren’t even trying to pronounce Dutch names correctly #vanderValk.”

A sixth even said: “I was waiting to hear Marc Warren’s Dutch accent. I was waiting to hear any Dutch accents. Is this really #VanDerValk or The Bill? And they’ve fucked over the theme music. Not loving it.”

While Marc failed to adopt the Dutch accent, that’s not to say the same went for the rest of the cast.

In fact, before the series aired, the show’s leading man praised his fellow castmates for their talents.

Discussing filming in Amsterdam, Marc said: “Before I had only done the touristy parts but living here I walked everywhere and got to know the city a bit more.

“I think it’s a very cool city. It is very beautiful, and such an interesting place.”
