Cerys is a geriatric doctor who recently cut short her six month sabbatical to help on the frontline of the global coronavirus pandemic.
Asked why he had decided to spend this time away from his wife, Russell explained: “She’s working for the NHS, so she’s a frontline doctor. And she’s also got a couple of doctors living with her, who have got elderly relatives so it kind of felt like the most sensible thing to do, was to unfortunately live apart.”
The comedian then added: “It’s heartbreaking but it’s for the greater good.”
Tim then commented on the fact that Russell was back living at his childhood home in Bath with his parents, and asked how it was.
“It’s brutal,” Russell replied. “On my 40th birthday I was meant to be doing an arena in Amsterdam and I slept in my teenage bed.
“It was like the universe’s way of saying, ‘don’t get ahead of yourself’, so yeah it’s fairly strange but it could be a lot worse.
“I’m very lucky that I still get to make a TV show and all the money is going to a food bank charity and an NHS charity together.
“I feel like I’m doing my own little small thing to make some money,” he added.
The funnyman started dating Cerys in 2004, when Russell was 21 years old and she was 17, as the sister of his friend.
On New Year’s Eve 2018, Russell confirmed on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man that the pair were getting married. Cerys and Russell got hitched in June 2019 in a quiet ceremony with family and friends.
